- How can I think outside the box and level up my search?
If you’re just starting your job search, or if you’re looking for new inspiration, read on to discover the best places to look for jobs.
Consider your industry.
Looking for work in the entertainment industry? Or looking for jobs in fashion? There are many industry-specific job boards to consider or certain job platforms that may be better suited to your field. Some platforms, like LinkedIn, or ZipRecruiter, can be a catch-all for a diverse range of roles, but it’s always a good idea to look for niche sites that may be specific to you. So if you want to work in fashion, you might check Style Careers or Fashion Jobs. In that same vein - some leading job platforms cater to certain kinds of work over others. LinkedIn may not have as many entertainment jobs as Playbill or Entertainment Careers, but they lead the way for listings in other industries - like finance, professional services, and specialized roles.
Don’t limit yourself.
Apply anywhere you find a role that feels like a good fit. If you want to increase your chances of hearing back, apply for roles you feel qualified for based on the outlined requirements. Sometimes it can feel like applying for a new job is its own full-time job. If you’re applying everywhere but not hearing back, maybe it’s time to change your strategy.
Why It’s a Good Idea to Work with a Recruiter
Recruiting firms work directly with hiring managers to connect top talent with leading companies. We often work on exclusive listings - meaning the jobs we recruit for aren’t posted to traditional job platforms. Recruiters spend their days making matches between qualified candidates and the clients looking to hire. If you want a true partner on your job search, work with a recruiting firm. Our biggest incentive is finding the right job for you, and we serve as a totally free resource to utilize in your search. If you work with Career Group Companies you’ll get:
- Access to exclusive listings not listed elsewhere
- An advocate who will negotiate on your behalf
- Career matches aligned with your goals and experiences
- Resume and portfolio feedback and guidance
- Interview prep and career guidance
- A long-term career advisor dedicated to your growth
Looking for Work Outside the Box
Most people looking for work will start with the major job platforms. These sites have a ton of great job listings to browse and apply for and most of them are simple and free to use. These include LinkedIn, Indeed, and ZipRecruiter. The only problem with these sites is that your application can often end up in the resume black hole (submitting applications but never hearing back). To combat this, you need to think outside the box.
Use LinkedIn Differently
Recruiting firms will post their job listings to LinkedIn when they are in need of qualified candidates. Many job seekers don’t realize that they are posting on behalf of a client, usually clients from a variety of industries. Try refining your search parameters to browse listings directly from a recruiter. These jobs are actively monitored by talent specialists, meaning your application is more likely to be seen using this approach. Plus, if a recruiter likes your resume, they may have other open job opportunities they can consider you for. Another pro tip? Check your LinkedIn messages, and respond! Recruiters will often reach out to you directly through LinkedIn, even if you haven’t applied for a job. We can search LinkedIn profiles via keywords and position titles, so if you seem like a perfect fit for an open role we’ll definitely want to connect! Recruiters have your best interests at heart, and it doesn’t hurt to keep the door open to new connections. You never know where they might lead. Make sure your profile is optimized to show your strengths and turn on the Open to New Opportunities feature. Don’t forget - LinkedIn is a social network. In addition to searching for work on their Jobs tab, search in your newsfeed! Follow the #hiring hashtag to see posts from Hiring Managers who are hoping to grow their team and forge new connections. The larger your network, the more opportunities you will see.
