What is a Package Designer?
Package Designers utilize their unique and specialized design skills to create fully realized and functional designs for packaged goods, often using software to create sketches and renderings. They will partner with Copywriters, Creative Directors, and other creative team members to ensure designs meet brand guidelines, suit target audiences, and comply with any legal regulations. Clients seek Package Designers to produce attractive and cost effective designs that carry the message of the company to the consumer in an eye-catching and functional way. Due to the creative nature of the work, Package Designers can work in-house with one brand or work on a freelance basis with many clients.
Package Designer Qualifications
Most entry-level Package Design roles require a bachelor’s degree in industrial design or a related field. A solid understanding of typography, graphics, photography, and other design elements is extremely valuable, while familiarity with 3D design software, including CAD or AutoCAD, is usually expected. Strong interpersonal skills are also a must since Package Designers frequently work with marketing and business professionals to address costs and deadlines. Package Designers should be aware of market trends, or have prior experience with market research, and have a knack for creative problem solving. Today, they are expected to know consumer packaging health and safety regulations while keeping sustainability in mind.
