Think a candidate’s qualifications might not fit the bill? There could be more than meets the eye.

"You’re going to wonder why I’m sending you the résumé of a dog walker.” This is what Susan Levine, CEO and founder of Los Angeles-based recruitment and advisory firm Career Group Companies, told one of her long-time clients.

“Great hires often come with unexpected previous work or life experiences,” Levine says. “From summer jobs to athletic achievements, these candidates possess valuable, transferable skills that help them succeed and excel.”
Levine recalls hiring a woman who had been a hostess at Olive Garden for an entry-level recruiting role. Despite some companies passing over her resume, Levine had a gut feeling and invited her for an interview.
“She made people feel fantastic. She made candidates feel that she really cared about them,” Levine says. “She ultimately became a managing director.”
